Category 6 ride led by Ian Bailey
This worked out rather better than expected. Firstly, for mysterious reasons, the ride failed to make the weekly email and I was late learning that I could put it on the website. Secondly, I realised late on that our return journey would be into strong gusts of wind. Thirdly, was it wise to choose one of the most popular cycling cafes in the county on such a sunny day?
Despite that, two companions started on a bright day and we were joined soon after by a third. The outward journey - fortunately the longer leg - was wind-assisted and an enjoyable run though the spring sunshine and awakening Hertfordshire countryside.
Spokes was excellent. It was busy, but it’s a big site and there were plenty of seats - we sat out in the sun. The staff were well-organised and efficient and the food came out quickly. The coffee was good. And the general ‘isn’t cycling great?’ ambience was improved further by screens showing the early stages of the Ronde van Vlaanderan.
The return journey was certainly a bit more challenging but we rode in a line and still made good progress; and kept the average speed well above the cat 6 norm. Good day out!
