Emitremmus 100k - 29 Oct 2017

30 Oct 17

I thought there was only one Wheeler but I missed Steve W at the start. However I did notice Ian P and John H near Therfield - presumably on the Cat 3 heading back from Royston. There must have been others hiding behind wind-proof jackets. Oh, and earlier in the day I saw John and Cathy on the Cat 5 heading through Benington on the way to TBA.
Those who missed it missed a good day; cool and becoming cooler but with plenty of sunshine. There was quite a stiff northerly breeze which made some sections of the route out to Saffron Walden quite tough. I tackled these with a mixture of determination and fortitude - and riding behind other participants.
There were three controls on the route which is more than enough for a 100k. I had my card stamped at all of them but avoided tea and cake until the last one at Therfield Village Hall, a glorious operation run by the formidable Women's Institute. Tea, a round of cheese and pickle sandwiches and a slab of cake, £4. All this was enjoyed safe in the knowledge that the remaining miles would be largely wind-assisted.
I made it back to Stevenage by 2:30 and a brisk wind-propelled ride got me back to Cheshunt well before lighting up time.
As usual, this was a very well organised event with hundreds of happy customers.
