06:00 start from Dunmow with 40 hours to complete. What could go wrong? Well, not a lot actually.
The weather gods promised about 10 hours of rain, and we got that. They also promised a night-time low of 10 degrees, but it went down to 4 degrees. It's said that there's no such thing as bad weather, just bad choice of clothing. I wasn't kitted out for such low temperatures and suffered accordingly. But being a flat course it was fairly quick. One of the downsides of this is that it's more difficult to change riding style\rhythm and generate some warmth. However by about 08:00 on Sunday the temperature started to heat up indicating a glorious day ahead. Have never yet had a good day heading south over the fens - usually it's too hot, with a headwind. Got back to Dunmow at 17:00 on Sunday.
The route headed north to Goole via Red Lodge, Whittlesey, Boston and Kirton in Lindsey. The return took us through Gainsborough, Lincoln, Sleaford, Chatteris and Cambridge. Lincoln at 02:00 is chucking out\up time from the pubs & clubs so extra vigilance was required there.
Completion of this has made me an Essex Super Randonneur to go with the SR achieved earlier this year. PW
