Category 5/6 ride led by Mike East
Not sure what to expect on my ride to the start. How many would be wanting to do 62 miles today? I was surprised at the turn out of twenty-one, a melange from all club ride groups. It did soon become clear that the majority had shorter ride ambitions. However, all agreed to follow the pre-audax audax route as far as Mill Green Tea Room, some 50km from Ware.
Near the stop a pair of riders dropped away. The rest enjoyed the nosebag, especially the ride leader who took the final piece of Bakewell tart. Would have been even better with custard. After the break the ride fractured into various groups heading in all directions. Some, no doubt, had to get home for the Tottenham Hotspur wake. Another was celebrating his 65th birthday - does this club really have members aged over 60?
The continuing audaxers comprised nine, some of whom declared their intention to turn off when they had had enough. By the time they seemed ready to make that decision, the shortest route home was the route home, so all completed the course. Thanks must go to Ian S, who confirmed the route at various points when the ride leader hesitated - Mr Memory indeed. “Am I right, sir?”
Apart from a stiffening breeze from the south later on, the weather was spot on and the company too.
