Category 6 ride not led by Danny Hood
I'm afraid to say that this ride didn't go ahead. I arrived at the start with good intentions but secretly looking for a way out. I'd volunteered as no one else was available to lead, but after getting soaked last weekend, waking to the sound of pouring rain on my bedroom roof was a bit of a downer. A few hardy souls gathered at HQ ready for the ride but the majority seemed to want to get back early, so I used my get out of jail card and jumped ship. Those still keen decided to abandon a café stop and just do a shortish loop.
I called the café to cancel the table and then headed for home.
As usual the weather didn't end up too bad in the end and I hope those who did ride enjoyed it.
It's me again next week and I'll be leading whatever the weather then. So have a good week and I'll see those game enough next week.
Category 5 ride led by John Farnham
The very heavy overnight rain probably deterred a few of the regulars from turning out, but the weather gods smiled on us and brought forth a surprisingly fine but windy day. However only four Wheelers took the start for our alternative ride in a north westerly direction since the closure of the 'International Sporting Complex' at Tea Green. Part of the original outward route through Datchworth Green, Nup End and Rustling End was maintained followed by a diversion via Whitwell, Bendish and Copt Hall Lane down to the old Luton railway line for the final approach into Harpenden. Following the Sustrans route through the back streets brought us to our tea stop at Cafe Gusto. This is a cyclist friendly cafe in a cul-de-sac just off the High Street and has seating inside for about 20 people plus two or three tables outside. Good quality food and drink with friendly service as well. Return through more back streets of Harpenden, Batford, Sauncey Wood, Gustard Wood, Codicote, Rabley Heath, Oaklands, Bulls Green back to Hertford. 42 miles, one puncture but no mechanicals or tumbles.
