It was another cold, inhospitable night but at least the threatened rain and hail held off. There was a good turn-out, especially from the private entrants. Thanks all for taking part. Thanks also for Graham and Pater for the timing and Sam for the signs.

Only four at the start! Still, it's quality not quantity that you want in a ride, so it was good to welcome Barry back after a long absence. Despite declaring a lack of long-distance rides he outlasted us all. The others were Richard, who did sterling work pulling us along between challenging himself on all the hills and Denis, who finally enjoyed a ride devoid of mechanical misfortunes.

I thought it was about time I stepped up and lead my first Cat 6 club run.

Having studied a few of the previous leaders in action, I knew what was required of me.
I had to find the quietest of lanes (Mike), I had to continuously float effortlessly from the back to the front of the ride (Danny), whilst chatting and laughing as I climbed every steep hill (Tony DS).

Despite the tough course and cool weather there was a good turnout, 8 Wheelers and 3 private entrants. It was good to see several of our less regular time-trialists joining in the "fun". Well done to all of them!

With the CTT authorising events from 29th March and, we hope, some prospect of a full season, we have published our programme of Club TTs. These events are free to members and are open to members of CTT-affiliated clubs for a fee of £5. Some events are marked as "Come and Try". These are available to anyone whether or not they are members of a CTT affiliated club.

Please note that special COVID procedures are in place!

With the lock-down rules changing on Monday 29th March the rule of six will return. However, following negotiations between Sport England and the Government, organised outdoor sports will be exempt from this limit.

Wheeler Jonny Spowart completed his grueling 24 hour challenge in aid of the charity "Head for Change". The ride took place on 6th and 7th March, 12 hours each day, 8am-8pm, and was completed on a Turbo trainer using the Zwift software. Jonny had to overcome some difficult moments but rode 780 km to smash his fundraising target with over £2,900 raised.

Bill first joined the club in 1977 and was made a life member in 2015. Many will remember him as a kind and always considerate companion on club runs. Bill often gave up his time to help the club including, most recently, refurbishing club race signs each winter. He was active in several local causes and organised a number of charity events.

Head for Change

Jonny Spowart bill be attempting a 24hr Zwift ride on 6th and 7th March. 12 hours each day. 8am-8pm. This is in aid of the charity Head for Change which aims to provide a "safe space for our sporting heroes, past, present and future. Head for Change is a new charity, pioneering positive change for brain health in sport and supporting ex-players who are affected by neurodegenerative disease as a result of their career playing football or rugby".

We did not manage to run the Time Trial league in 2020 because of the Covid restrictions but we did manage to run some races including all of the Out of Season events and of particular note is the magnificent haul by Alex Powell who, by winning two of the OOS events and coming second in the other, ran away with the Out of Season Best All Rounder competition.  He also won the Old Skool race for good measure!  Other winners of individual events were Gareth Wignall, Claire Gopoulos and Brian Hill.  Well done to them all.

It wasn't a bright, sunny autumn morning, - more still, chilly gloom. Never mind, it wasn't wet and there was no head-wind, so I'm sure everyone enjoyed their brisk sprint up the hill. At any rate, several seemed to be panting with enjoyment as they reached the end.

What a difference a week makes! No more sunshine in our lives but plenty of wind, especially true for the first 10 miles as we headed north to Clavering in the teeth of the gale. Despite being Wheelers we did manage at times to make a passible impression of a pace line; needs must when the devil drives. Thankfully the route to Bardfield then took us east which improved our rather glacial pace somewhat though a steady and un-advertised drizzle dampened enthusiasm a little.

Well we all woke excited for the first Tour de Hertswheelers, six thoroughbred riders ready and raring to go. No, wait, Kate decides to turn up at 9:02am! There’s always one eh, normally Mr Eldon, but this time he was early! I know, shock horror! No one was out on the lash last night, probably because Marcia couldn’t make it!

A group of 8 set off from Cole Green variously stimulated or exhausted by their TT exertions. A fairly direct route was taken to Mill End Plants at Rushden but we were shedding riders along the way so that only three made it to the tea and cakes. Mill End were busy so we had plenty of time to enjoy the late summer sunshine before heading home via Sandon and Buntingford.

In lovely sunshine five happy Wheelers set off for Whitwell at a nice steady  pace.

A lovely morning with sunshine and apparently light winds, which maybe didn't seem so light to those actually racing.

Well done everyone but especially Alex with an excellent time which required extremely rapid leg spinning.
