Cancelled - no signs

After a sleepless Friday night in a Macclesfield hotel, I got up at 04:00 and left at 05:00 for an 06:00 start two miles away.  A wind assisted journey through Prees, Newtown (migraine), Llandrindod Wells, Builth Wells to Llandovery at 228kms.  Was watching the storm clouds for the last few miles but was happy to get to the cafe where there was an almighty crash (thunder) and someone rushed in to say that there was torrential rain.  A good time to stay in the cafe.

The forecast was for a cool start with the sun scheduled to appear at 10:00. In the event we had to wait until 2:30 for our first, brief sunny interval. We were mostly under-dressed, so the chill wind from the north made the first half of the ride tougher than expected. Eventually the sun appeared properly which cheered us along our way.

On Friday 27/5/16 I rode my first DIY Audax, calling it the tour of Essex.
I started very early at just after 4am heading from Harlow via Chelmford and though Danbury then up through Colchester, Manningtree before looping around and heading towards Bures. Return was via Castle Hedingham, Sible Hedingham, Finchingfield and Thaxted then through Much Hadham, Royston and into Harlow.
130 miles, 5000ft of climbing. Some stunning little villages and some of the best country side Essex has to offer.
Completed in 10 hours 16 minutes.

I've never ducked a hilly audax, but it was nice to finally get a flatty albeit in Norfolk.  Starting at Lound (Gt Yarmouth) I met up with Alex and we made our way to Stiffkey over the top of Norwich via Caistor and Coltishall and then we returned south of Norwich via Wymondham.  The total length was 213kms of which 200+ was in Norfolk and a titchy bit (start & finish) in Suffolk.  PW.

Seven wheelers braved the sun and chill on a 60m tour of Essex.The roads out through Roydon, Epping, Theydon, Garnon, Passiingford Bridge, Kelvedon Hatch, Blackmore were busy with cyclists enjoying the sun but wishing they had knee warmers and gillets !  After refreshments we returned via Norton heath ,Willingale ,Fyfield ,Moreton ,Matching Green, Sawbridgeworth. No punctures or mechanicals (or crashes !)

We have received the sad news that Pat died peacefully earlier this week.

At last I finally managed to start a ride from Meopham (Kent), although sadly I still can't pronounce it!  Another surprise was to find that I actually knew some of the other riders (outside of HW).  GrahamK turned up, though I was unable to keep up with him from the start.  AlexP & JohnM were also there to do the 160.  Got going at 08:00 and made our way via hills, dales, over the Medway alongside the M2 and into the inner depths of Kent until we reached Hythe.  Then came the flat bit, with the afternoon heat.  I struggled and then some.  Managed to keep going but the final few miles w
