  • Started from Gt Bromley (nr Colchester) at 08:00.  A fast wind-assisted trip up to Halesworth via Wickham, thence onto Palgrave (Diss) for more food and hospitality.  This set us up for the toughie (headwind) bit down to Sudbury with most of the old hands saying "it's not as bad as last year".  Left Sudbury just at 15:50 but soon it was dark with torrential rain, a strong cross-wind on an unlit road and all a bit tricksie.  I made fairly good time and got back at 18:10.  A reasonably flat course engineered so that the bits that were worth seeing were during the day, whilst once it got dark

  • I'd never done a DIY Audax before, just calendar events.  So I sent in an application showing my proposed route and got the OK with the proviso that I "controlled" at every place mentioned.  I think that this was my first mistake.  Next time I'll put fewer place names.  From Hertford to Chesham, then Wendover.  After a few hours of cycling into the wind it was a blessed relief to freewheel the last few miles at over 20mph.  From Wendover to Dunstable wasn't that tough but this changed as I turned south for the short climb up to the Chiltern Visitor Centre.  Markyate was my 100km point and s

Fifteen set off to Royston in search of nutrition on a figure of eight route to try and avoid the worst of the gales.t This worked  more or less but a detour was imposed by the leader on the return leg when more became less (and the rain started !) 48 miles

  • Combined Cat 5 & 6 run led by Bob B
As both Cat 5 and Cat 6 were starting at Hertford and as a total of only 9 riders were brave (? foolish) enough to tackle the threatened high winds and rain, it was decided to combine the rides.

A gentle ride to Mocca cafe in Bishop's Stortford was marred only by a puncture, and the ride leader temporarily losing both his bearings and marbles at Spellbrook, resulting in much mirth all round. Next time the leader will bring not only a map, but also a compass and sextant.  Eighteen on the ride over 33 miles.
Cat 5 run led by Sarah W
Only one rider braved the cold to cycle out to MH to join Sarah. A route adjustment was made to head for  Clavering Lakes which was fairly quiet. Sunny conditions made for a very pleasant ride.

It was a blustery day! Enough to propel us to at high speed across the heights between Buckland and Barkway. Enough to bring us nearly to a halt between Berden and Stocking Pelham on the way back. Ian P's crash bore witness to the high speed bit when he misjudged a bend; new longs and probably some new skin needed. Between the high and low speed bits the café in Chishill popped up and provided us with soup and bread plus cake and a drink - all for about a fiver. Enjoyed by all I think.  Thanks to Peter B for looking after our rear end.

  • Thinking that I'd get my November 200 done ASAP I entered this without reading the small print.  Whaddamistakertomaker!  It was an AAA event ie bloody hilly.  Starting at Ruislip but mainly set in the Cotswolds you'd expect a few lumps and maybe some bumps but some of these posed quite serious problems.  It's all very well suffering physically uphill, but no fun downhill on the mental front.  Some of the descents were as steep as the climbs.  Therefore brakes fully on and travelling at speeds equivalent to climbing speeds.  And less fun as everywhere was wet although it didn't rain.  But th

Fourteen set out to Hare Street on a slightly chilly start to what turned out to be a perfect day via Hunsdon, Widford, Perry Green, Bishops Stortford, Manuden, Furneaux Pelham, and Little Hormead. Incredibly sat outside in the garden at the wrong end of October for our cheerfully served refreshments. Returned on the well worn route through Buntingford, Great Munden, Standon and Barwick Ford. The inevitable compelling statistics were 43 miles at a 14 mph overall average and 3 punctures sustained by a single wheel.
